Speaker: Dr. Mahesh Kalra, Dinesh Mody Institute, University of Mumbai, Mumbai. Title: The Story of Indian Money - A Kaleidoscopic Journey.

Abstract:

This lecture will give a historical overview of Indian money from pre-historic barter objects through Harappan objects, Vedic concept of money to the first genuine Buddhist period coins and continue on the introduction of Greek-styled die-struck coinage issued by various invaders till the arrival of Kushans and Guptas. It will also cover South Indian coinage on the side and then cover post-Gupta coinage into Islamic coinage of medieval India and into colonial coinage along with Princely States'Coinage and end with the currency of modern Republic of India's coinage. At the end, this lecture shall provide information about the new initiative called Centre for Indian Numismatic Information &Studies(CENNUMIS).

About the Speaker:

Dr. Mahesh Kalra is Assistant Professor and Curator, Dinesh Mody Institute, University of Mumbai, Mumbai. Currently he is the Regional Secretary of the Oriental Numismatic Society, U.K. for South Asia and have just begun his own small initiative in Numismatics called CENNUMIS.
