Justice, Ethics and Community
1. Classic Writings: The introductory section will focus on some classic philosophical writings on the theme of justice and community by thinkers such as Immanuel Kant and John Rawls.
2. Critiques and Contemporary Frameworks: Drawing on the work of contemporary philosophers, this section will highlight some problems with the traditional philosophical theories of justice and community, especially how they fail to adequately accommodate concerns about difference, inequality, oppression, and privilege. Some alternative philosophical frameworks such as “politics of difference,” “ethic of care,” etc., which emerge from these critiques and are attentive to difference and diversity, will also be introduced.
3. Quandaries of Difference and Building Communities across Differences: This section will deepen the philosophical conversation around the concept of ‘difference’ and its implications. We will discuss how questions about difference are often deeply entangled with issues of power and structural injustice, and theorize possible ways for navigating/negotiating these to order to live ethically with others and to build more inclusive and just communities.
