A two-day (29th August 2024 afternoon and 30th August 2024 morning and afternoon) workshop is being organised on the theme "Comprehending Pedagogies in Performance Studies", a project that was initiated with the SCPP Grant, from IOE funds in IIT Bombay. This project has exponents of performance studies from IIT Bombay and Meiji University, Tokyo, Japan. This workshop will be the project's second phase where the scholars from Japan will visit IIT Bombay to conduct a workshop on performance studies. This workshop will help students who are focussing on the themes of performance and also the ongoing conversation as to how can performances be researched, what holds a research methodology or approach to observe and study them and how can one write about them in an approachable manner. This workshop will discuss papers focusing on methods of analysis, understanding the movement practices, institutional support in funding performances and the ideas of performances developing from traditional ranging from rituals to community performances to other performative forms and performances specific to Japan, China and India.

The prime collaborator of the project is Dr Takayuki Hioki, who is an Associate Professor at Meiji University, Tokyo. He received a BA degree in Theatre Studies from Waseda University and earned MA and PhD degrees at The University of Tokyo. His research interests include the modernization of the kabuki and the representation of wars, disasters and diseases in Japanese theatre in the Meiji era (1868-1912). His publications include "Kabuki in the Transforming Era: A History of the Kabuki in the Late Edo Period and the Meiji Era" (in Japanese, published by Kasama Shoin, 2016) and "Who is Mayama Seika?" (co-ed., in Japanese, Published by Bungaku Tsushin, 2019).

The workshop on each day will conclude with performances held in the evening at IDC auditorium on 29th August there will be a Yakshagana performance, by _Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali_ and on 30th August, there are Parai performances and Kuchipudi lecture demonstration by Professor Yashoda Thakore.
