Session II: Translating Heidegger’s Black Notebooks: Negotiating Heidegger's Politics of Desolation

Abstract:

 First session:

 This workshop consisting of two sessions will address the issue of translation from a philosophical standpoint. The first session will have Adam Knowles and Arun Iyer discuss the practical difficulties they have faced in their translations of Heidegger and Gadamer respectively.  What is the nature of these difficulties?  How are they different from thinker to thinker?  What does that say about the translating any text, be it philosophical or literary or scientific?  Are there any limits to translation? What deserves to be translated?  What is translation?  Is it an act or an event? How is it different from other related linguistic activities like reading, writing and speaking?

 Second Session:

 The second session will concern Adam Knowles’ translation of some of Heidegger’s Black Notebooks written in the 1940s and the specific thought he encountered in them, which he calls the politics of desolation.  In this regard Knowles will specifically address the issue a translating a political mood.  Knowles’ interlocutor in this session will be Siby George, whose unique study of the socio-political implications of Heidegger’s thought to question the course of development in the Global South and the desolation caused by that development, makes him an ideal dialogue partner in this political affair.
