The theoretical underpinnings of the concept of Indian public sphere have been dominated by the Western philosophical landscape, especially by Jurgen Habermas. In this talk, my aim is to offer an alternative trajectory of the Indian public sphere at two levels. First, I will offer an overview of prevalent Indian engagements with Habermas so that the limitations of Indian political theory in this regard are underlined. Second, I will delve into the resources within the Indian context (Gandhi, Ambedkar, Matilalal, Mohanty, etc.) to search for an alternative normative structure of an Indian public sphere.
