Maitrī (loving-kindness - _mettā_ in Pali) and non-violence (_avihiṃsā/ahiṃsā_) are the fundamental moral principles established in Buddhist virtue. They are highlighted in the noble eightfold path, ten perfections,  four great abodes, and five precepts, etc. for the long-term welfare and happiness. However, there are cases where some stories from Theravada Buddhism try to justify killing for self-defense, the greater good, or resistance to injustice. A few Jātaka tales that highlight later Buddhist viewpoints are Sigāla, Vaḍḍakīsūkara, and Mūsika. Some stories depicted in the chronicles also followed the Jataka tales. A Bodhisattva who is still on his way to ultimate liberation might encounter a defensive attitude to conflict resolution as an alternative.
