Abstract of the Workshop - In this paper, I outline and defend a new account of emotion in the tradition of motivational theories. Very roughly, I argue that what is central to occurrent emotion is a valenced experience that has directive content that prompts us both to take emotion-specific means to emotion-specific ends and to treat some feature of the object as a reason for doing so. Like existing motivational theories, this directivist view handles cases like akratic and recalcitrant emotion well. Unlike these related accounts, however, directivism highlights the central role of emotional experience or feeling in emotional agency, allows for the possibility of occurrent emotion without any motivation, and explains how emotional motivation is often integrated with deliberation.
