Abstract:

On the night of November 8 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Government's decision to demonetise the 500 and 1000 rupee currency notes, it took the entire country by surprise. Two weeks on, as news comes in from various parts of the country on how demonetisation has affected them, we discuss the issue from various perspectives to gain a detailed and holistic understanding of the move and reflect upon its short-term and long-term effects.

About the speakers:

Anush Kapadia, Assistant Professor, Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Bombay.

Anush's research revolves around Theories of Money, Sociology and Political Economy of Finance, Politcal Economy of Development and Indian Political Economy. His research interests are specifically directed towards understanding how political choices lead to macro-social outcomes such as growth or crises.

Priyanka Kakodkar, Journalist, Times of India

Closely associated with the People's Archive of Rural India, Priyanka has written extensively on the agrarian crisis in Maharashtra and human development in general. She has also widely reported on the effects of demonetisation on the rural and informal economy of India.Shishir JhaAssociate Professor, SJMSOM, IIT BombayShishir specialises in research relating to topics such as Indian Society and Political Economy of the Third World, Impact of Globalisation on Indian Society and Theorising Sustainable and Democratic Alternatives ofGlobalisation.

Assistant Professor, Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Bombay

Arun is a scholar of philosophy. He has worked on 20th Century Continental Philosohpy, Phenomenology and Hermeneutics, Metaphysics and History of Western Philosophy. He is interested in engaging with the philosophical being of money.
