Quality and Equity in Higher Education: Decoding Social Justice in Nation Education Policy 2020

Abstract:
The NEP 2020 unveiled its agenda for 21st Century India. It aims to transform the education system from KG to PG and reclaim the Viswaguru status on the global education map. It offers new ways of approaching modern education from the Indian perspective. The document envisioned quality and excellence in the educational map. However, critical sociological reasoning of the document unfolds the paradoxical position of the state towards social justice. Its strategic silence on gender equality and multiple marginalities demonstrates the inadequate response of the state towards the marginal sections of society as it does not address the positive relationship between the social and the educational ladder. The special needs of the underprivileged sections of society need to be recognized to ensure equity and quality across the higher educational layers. To fulfil the aims of the new education policy, the state has to work with the utmost commitment by expanding the educational institutions with the principles of social justice.
