Abstract:

          Japan is the most rapidly ageing society in the world and its population is shrinking. These trends pose a number of economic, social and political challenges for Japan. This transition from "demographic bonus™ to ˜demographic onus" is projected to be followed by other Asian economies, including India in the coming decades. This talk outlines debates on the impact of demographic trends and policy responses in Japan and draws potential lessons for India. 

About the speaker:

            Dr. Satoshi Miyamura is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics and Director of Learning & Teaching (Curriculum & QA), at the SOAS University of London. He has taught courses on the economic development of Japan and South Asia; quantitative and research methods; development economics and economic theories. His research interests are in the political economy of development in India and Japan; economics of labour and institutions; economic history and history of economic thought.
          Dr. Miyamura completed a BA in Language and Regional Cultural Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and an MA in Comparative Economics and Regional Development at the Graduate School of Economics, Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo.
