Abstract

This presentation makes an attempt to through light on the various criteria of Optimum Currency Area Theory and their empirical determination based on the research carried out during my Ph. D. and thereafter. The entire analysis is divided into two parts. Part Iemploys panel econometric techniques of Fixed Effects Model, Random Effects Model and Instrumental Variables techniques of Hausman-Taylor estimator and GMM on a generalized gravity model that controls for an extended set of trade theory and policy variables to check various trade-related effects of the single currency adoption i.e., the euro. Part II makes an attempt to find out the business cycle synchronization of major Euro-zone and Non-Euro (OECD) countries.

Dr.MohdHussainKunroo is currently associated with Department of Economics, Central University of Rajasthan. Prior to joining this University, Dr.Kunroo was working as SRT Fellow at the Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi. Earlier, he has worked as Assistant Professor at School of Management, The NorthCap University, Gurgaon; as Research Associate at Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India; as Teaching Assistant at Department of Economics, Jamia Millis Islamia, New Delhi; and as Visiting faculty at Amity university, Noida. Dr.Kunroocompleted his Ph. D. in Economics from Department of Economics, JamiaMilliaIslamia University, New Delhi; Masters in Economics from University of Hyderabad; and Hons. Economics from Aligarh Muslim University. He isUGC-NET (Economics)Qualified; recipient of Sir Ratan Tata Fellowship, Maulana Azad National Fellowship, Aligarh Muslim University Kashmiri Merit Fellowship, and Jammu and Kashmir Science Talent Promotion Scholarship.

Dr.Kunroo’s Ph. D. thesis was based on the topic “Optimum Currency Area: An Empirical Analysis of Euro-zone and Non-Euro Countries.” Based on his research works, he has published in various journals of international repute including Review of Market Integration, Empirica, Asian Journal of Law and Economics, Foreign Trade Review, International Labour Review, and Journal of International Economics. His research work has been recognized across the globe and even cited by Prof. Andrew K. Rose, the pioneer of ‘endogenous optimum currency area theory.’Up till now, he has worked on various databases including WDI, IMF-DOTS, IFS-IMF, OECD, Eurostat, UNCTAD, Penn World Tables, CEPII, COMTRADE, ASI, etc. He has also participated in various workshops on research methodology, quantitative methods and econometrics. His areas of interest are International Trade and Finance, Currency Unions, Gravity Modelling, Applied Econometrics, Labour Economics, and Empirical Macroeconomics.
