Seminar : "Engineers and Empirics in Indian Politics" by Mr. Praveen Chakravarty

Abstract:
What is the role of Big Data in politics at the present moment? How can it fundamentally alter the way representative democracies function? Could it bring democratic states much closer to their voters than ever before?
About the Speaker:
Praveen Chakravarty is the Chairman of the Data Analytics department of the Indian National Congress. Immediately prior, he was a Senior Fellow at IDFC Institute where his research focus was empirical research on India’s political economy and economic policy. His work has been published and cited in all mainstream and research publications in India and in foreign publications such as The Economist, Bloomberg, Foreign Affairs, South China Morning Post etc. Chakravarty previously served as Managing Director of Thomas Weisel Partners in the US and BNP Paribas India. He served as a member of the Primay and Secondary Markets committees of the Securities & Exchange Board of India and on the board of many private sector companies. He also co-founded Mumbai Angels in 2006, India’s largest angel investing group. Chakravarty also worked with the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) in the UPA2 government led by Dr.Manmohan Singh. He was the Founding Trustee of IndiaSpend, India’s first non-profit data journalism initiative. Chakravarty holds an MBA from The Wharton School and an undergraduate degree from BITS Pilani.
