Dual-Degree M.A. - Ph.D. (Philosophy)

This programme offers a 6-year Dual-Degree M.A.-Ph.D. Programme in Philosophy that is intensive in terms of its curriculum and intent [2-year M.A. Programme with the possibility to enter a 4-year Ph.D. Programme]. Furthermore, though the proposed degree is clearly in alignment with the discipline of Philosophy, the nature of the programme allows for a variety of electives that would offer the students various disciplinary perspectives on a philosophical theme or problem. The programme will be one of its kind in providing the prospective student with a deep and rigorous engagement with the primary texts of philosophy, both Indian and Western.   The students passing out of this programme are expected to be adequately equipped to handle independent research and teaching in any established academic institute.

  Eligibility

A Bachelor's Degree in any discipline with a minimum score of 60 percent [55 percent for SC/ST/OBC/PWD].

Entry
 

Entry into the Dual-Degree M.A.-Ph.D. Programme will be through a written examination (70 percent) along with an interview (30 percent). The syllabus is available at www.hss.iitb.ac.in . Apart from Philosophy, the applicant will be tested on critical reasoning, comprehension and writing skills. The entrance examination will be conducted during the summer at the HSS Department, IIT Bombay.

 Qualifier for the Ph.D Programme

MA+PhD students will be reassessed at the end of the fourth semester. In order to continue in the PhD progamme, they will have to fulfill the following requirements:

  1. CPI equal to or greater than 7.5 at the end of Semester IV;
  2. Grade of Project equal to or greater than ‘BB’ combining stages I and II, and
  3. Passing a viva-voce examination conducted by the Examination committee for the qualifier.

Exception to the above may also be made, subject to the student fulfilling the following conditions:

  1. CPL less than 7.5 (but above 6.5) after Semester IV;
  2. Grade of Project equal to or greater than ‘AB’, combing stages I and II, and
  3. Passing a viva-voce examination conducted by the Examination committee for the qualifier.

Students coming from both a 3 or 4-year UG Programmes will be treated on par.
